Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is a perfect opportunity for honoring Dr. King’s legacy by fostering growth and connection between emerging youth leaders.
Camp Fire Columbia staff and students took part in MLK Day of Service – empowering individuals and strengthening communities in addressing solutions to problems that our students and neighborhoods face daily.
Gilbert Heights Community Garden Project
Camp Fire Columbia, Hands On Greater Portland, staff from the Portland Trail Blazers, and kids from the Gilbert Heights SUN Student Council teamed together to work on the Gilbert Heights Community Garden.
Tasks included weeding, trash removal, raking, weatherizing, and having a blast! Students were thrilled to see Blaze the Trail Cat make an appearance during the project.
The Gilbert Heights Community Garden donates food to the Oregon Food Bank on a regular basis. Gilbert Heights Camp Fire SUN students also have their own plot and grow their own fruits and vegetables as part of their weekly Garden Club.
Outdoor School for All
Both Camp Fire Columbia and Outdoor School for All share a passion for Outdoor Education and believe all children should have access to great outdoor programming. On Martin Luther King, Jr Day, Camp Fire staff strengthened the Outdoor School for All campaign by calling supporters, processing critical data, and researching future campaign opportunities. Visit Outdoor School for All for more information on the fight to provide Outdoor School to EVERY student in Oregon.
