2015 Sessions & Themes – SE Portland Camp

NAMANU DAY CAMP IN THE CITY IS OPEN TO YOUTH ENTERING K THROUGH 5TH GRADE, FALL 2015.

Session 1 – Dream it, Design it, Do it!
June 22 – 26, 2015
Ever had a dream of building a giant cardboard castle or a Lego city that takes up practically the entire floor? Ever wanted to design your own clothes or put on your television show? If you can dream and design it, we can help you do it!
Wednesday, all day field trip to: Blue Lake Park Departure @ 9:15am Return @ 5pm

Our summer learning loss focus this week: engineering, architectural design, clothing design, math, literacy, writing

 

Session 2 – Kitchen Mischief
June 29 – July 3, 2015
It’s time to make some mischief in the kitchen! This week campers will learn cooking methods in and out of the kitchen, including various camp cooking techniques. We will make some edible delights, and a few inedible frights while we explore food and common kitchen ingredients, and make a few messes along the way!
Wednesday, all day field trip to: Camp Namanu Departure @ 9:15am Return @ 5pm

Our summer learning loss focus this week: math using measurements, fractions, multiplication etc. all through cooking, as well as reading recipes and transposing them into our own cookbooks.

 

Session 3 – Magical World of Namanu
July 6–10, 2015
Discover (or re-discover) the magical world of Namanu! Who is Mr. Scriggleboggle and where does he live? Who are the fairies that live at Camp and what are their jobs during the summer? Learn the answers to these questions and many more when we get campy and explore the traditions, tales, and magic that is Camp Namanu.

Session 4 – Out of this World (optional overnight available*)
July 13–17, 2015
Space is full of endless possibilities of the imagination and amazing unbelievable discoveries. Explore real and fictitious elements of space. Aliens and Black Holes, Astronauts and Storm Troopers, the moon rover and the Enterprise; nothing is too over the top because it’s all out of this world!

Our summer learning loss focus this week: science, astronomy,

*Optional Overnight: Departure on Thursday July 16th @ 9am, return on Friday July 17th @ 5pm.

 

Session 5 – Dr. Banana’s Wacky Lab
July 20 – 24, 2015
Experience messy, wacky science in Dr. Banana’s Lab. Mix substances to see how they react, combine elements and make explosive discoveries!
Wednesday, all day field trip to: George Rogers Park Departure @ 9:15am Return @ 5pm

Our summer learning loss focus this week: chemistry, physics, math through measurements, the process of scientific inquiry etc.

 

Session 6 – Globe Trekkers
July 27 – 31, 2015
We will walk a mile in another person’s shoes. Join us this week to experience different cultures from around the globe. Campers will explore other cultures through traditional foods, music and musical instruments, playing games, and recreating art and architecture.

Our summer learning loss focus this week: geography, math through cooking projects, engineering, physical education through games, etc.

 

Session 7 – City Campers (optional overnight available*)
August 3 – 7, 2015
We’ll take city slickers and make them into backyard campers! Learn the elements of camping including camp cooking, setting up a tent, respecting nature and staying safe on the trails.
Wednesday, all day field trip to: Silver Falls State Park Departure @ 9:15am Return @ 5pm

Our summer learning loss focus this week: science, math through cooking projects,

*Optional Overnight: Departure on Thursday August 3rd @ 9am, return on Friday August 7th @ 5pm.

 

Session 8 – MACH-1 (Multi-Adventure CHallenge)
August 10–14, 2015
Challenge yourself: body, mind, and spirit. Face challenges the Namanu way through fun, engaging games, silly obstacle courses, and strange new takes on traditional sports. Build sportsmanship through team-building challenges, push yourself to try new things, and have lots of fun along the way.

Our summer learning loss focus this week: literacy, teamwork, communication, physical education/Health education

 

Session 9 – Birds, Bugs & Bubbles
August 17–21, 2015
This week is all about animals; animals found flying through the sky, tunneling under the ground, making bubbles under the water and others. We will learn about what makes different types of animals special as well as learning more about the people who study them, train them, or keep them healthy.
Wednesday, all day field trip to: Blue Lake Park Departure @ 9:15am Return @ 5pm

Our summer learning loss focus this week: biology, veterinary science, oceanography, entomology, ornithology etc. 

 

Optional Overnights

During Session 4 (Out of this World) and Session 7 (City Campers) an optional overnight excursion is available. For an additional $75 your camper can experience a one night sleepover at Camp Namanu. Both trips depart Thursday at 9:00am and return by 4:00pm Friday. Campers will depart from and return to our SE Day Camp location.

Overnight campers will experience: meals in the dining hall, songs & stories around a campfire, stargazing, sleeping in a cabin, traditional camp crafts, wildlife viewing, swimming, over 90 years of Namanu Tradition and much more!
