Rachel grew up in Chicago and attended Oberlin College in Ohio, majoring in environmental studies and sociology-anthropology. Upon graduation she did an internship at Glen Helen Outdoor Education Center in Yellow Springs, OH, where she found her true calling of working with children in an educational environment. For the next several years Rachel worked at outdoor education centers in PA and CT, and then headed out west to go to graduate school at Southern Oregon University in environmental education. Her various employments in Oregon have included Before and After School Care Instructor with Ainsworth Elementary and Friendly House; assistant at West Hills and Child’s View Montessori schools; AmeriCorps member with Northwest Service Academy (NWSA); Tryon Creek Nature Camp Instructor (where her camp name was Stillwater), and program activity leader with Portland Parks & Recreation. This is Rachel’s first year with Camp Fire, having started this summer as unit lead with Namanu Day Camp in the City. She is excited to contribute a lot of her environmental education knowledge and activities with Camp Fire and the kids at Sunnyside, as well as fun crafts, songs and games. During her free time Rachel likes to attend various festivals and cultural events, read, hike, listen to OPB radio, watch TV, and visit with family and friends. She also loves traveling, having been all over Europe, most of the U.S., Canada, and parts of Africa before she moved out to Oregon, and would like to do more in the future.
