Founded in 1910, our comprehensive program starts with early intervention at the elementary level, bridges the learning gap for middle school, and helps students thrive and plan for bright futures during high school. During the school year, Camp Fire works in partnership with dozens of schools in the Metro Area. During the summer months, we offer summer camps in the Portland metro area and at our beautiful 552-acre camp, Camp Namanu, bordered by the vibrant Sandy River and presided over by century old trees. Our programs directly serve over 4,000 kids ages 5-18 each year across an eight-county area, including the greater Portland metro region. Camp Fire Columbia helps serve an additional 11,000 children and families annually through partnerships and special projects.

Position Overview:

Have you always wanted to work at a summer camp? Did you grow up going to camp and couldn’t wait until you were old enough to apply? Camp Namanu could be the place for you. Camp Namanu hires about 70 staff for the summer, and you could be the person we’ve been looking for. We are currently looking for Lifeguards who are skilled and safety-conscious, as well as love working with youth of all ages! This position is responsible for teaching assigned swimming classes, including planning material pertinent to needs of the class and for ensuring the safety of all campers and staff participating in waterfront activities by evaluating program areas and equipment for hazards and implementing safety instruction prior to use.

 

Essential Job Functions:

  1. Strictly enforces safety regulations for use of facilities and equipment.
  2. Follows the objectives of the Waterfront Program as formulated by the Waterfront Director.
  3. Participates in weekly “in-service” training at the pool.

 

Other Job Duties:

  • Performs general maintenance on the pool, duck pond, and off-site waterfront equipment.
  • Assists the Waterfront Director in routine cleaning of pool and pool deck as instructed by the Property Manager.
  • Assists with individual, cabin, unit and all camp activities as assigned.
  • Attends pre-camp training.
  • Ensures and maintains the cleanliness of camp facilities and grounds.
  • Participates in all camp meetings and activities: i.e. flag raising, banquet and council fire.
  • Attends all meals and act as a table host in the dining room.
  • Keeps records as needed and required.
  • Helps prepare camp for closing after last session ends.
  • Ensures policies and practices are followed that lead to safe and successful program experiences for all participants and staff.
  • Acts as a role model for enjoyment, integrity and dedication in the work of Camp Fire… we are in it for the kids!
  • Supports the mission, purpose and leadership of Camp Fire and projects a positive image of Camp Fire.
  • Attends Camp Fire meetings and events, as required.
  • Maintains punctual, regular and predictable attendance.
  • Works collaboratively in a team environment with a spirit of cooperation.
  • Displays excellent communication skills including presentation, persuasion, and negotiation skills required in working with coworkers, volunteers, parents, and contractors; including the ability to communicate effectively and remain calm and courteous under pressure.
  • Respectfully takes direction from supervisor.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to work in teams and independently.
  • Ability to prioritize and multitask effectively.
  • Self-starter, proactive.
  • Flexibility and willingness to adapt to the needs of the organization.
  • Always treats youth, coworkers, and volunteers with respect and kindness
  • Be a positive role model for youth and adults at all times.
  • All staff must have or obtain these required safety set trainings:
    • CPR/First Aid.
    • Oregon Food Handlers’ card.
    • Valid Red Cross Lifeguard certificate.
  • Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds.
  • Ability to sit and/or stand for long periods of time and maintain satisfactory energy levels for duration of programming.
  • Enjoyment of outdoor living, experience working with children.
  • Safety conscious.
  • Bi-lingual and/or multi-lingual encouraged to apply.

 

Salary and Benefits:

  • Compensation: Position includes room and board and starts $36/day.
